conducting an interview

You need to observe these general guidelines:
  1. Decide on your specific purpose _ determine what you would like to glean from the interview and communicate that purpose directly to the person you plan to interview.
  2. Structure the interview in advance_plan your questions so that you have a clear idea of what to ask when. The interview may not follow your list exactly,so you'll need to remain flexible and free to deviate from your interview plan to clarify on a precious response.Begin the interview by setting limits on what will be covered during the session.End the interview by recapping the main ideas and expressing your appreciation.
  3. Remember that interviews are interactive processes and adept interviewers should be good listeners. You should listen carefully to what is said and accurately interpret the significance of those comments. There is a definite pattern of turn-taking in interviews that allows plenty of opportunity to clarify remarks.
  4. A good interviewer builds a sense of mutual respect and trust.Feelings of trust and respect are created by revealing your own motivation,by getting the person to talk, and by expressing sympathy and understanding.Good communications skills and a well-thought out set of questions build rapport in interview situations. You should always follow up the interviews with a note expressing your appreciation for the person's shared time and expertise.
